Lassen sweeps Redwoods in three-game weekend series

Redwoods baseball let a golden opportunity slip away in game two of a three-game weekend baseball series at Lassen.

The CR men opened the series with a 9-1 loss, before dropping game two 3-2 and then losing game three 17-5.

With the three losses, Redwoods dropped to 4-16 overall and 2-15 in the Golden Valley Conference.

But after posting wins on back-to-back weekends, Redwoods had another opportunity at Lassen.

CR led 2-1 after seven innings in game two, but the home team would add two late scores to sneak the come-from-behind win.

“Overall disappointing weekend,” CR head coach John Downey said. “Would have loved to have taken game two, but unfortunately we gave it away there at the end.

“It’s heartbreaking to see these guys not find that successful feeling after such a great game.

“Games one and three weren’t nearly as fun, but there’s always highlights to take away.”

Despite the three losses and the team’s struggles this spring, the CR head coach has been more than happy with the fight his players continue to display.

“I have to give the biggest compliment to our guys in how engaged and locked-in they are throughout each and every inning,” Downey said. “We talk about winning 18 half innings, and they are loud and engaged in each one. They could easily have rolled over a while ago, but they have a fire every day that is undeniable.

“They want to win, they want to see each other succeed, and they want to make the most out of the rest of the season. I’m proud to be their coach regardless of the outcome.”

Carson Fleming finished 2-for-3 in the opening game at Lassen and continued to make some noise in game two, finishing 1-for-2 with a pair of RBIs.

Tristen Valenzuela pitched eight strong innings in game two, allowing just two earned runs and striking out three, while Hunter Stockinger was 2-for-4 at the plate.

Fleming capped an impressive weekend with another base hit in game three, while David MacDonald finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Javier Mesa was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Next up, CR plays a doubleheader at Feather River on Friday, with game one set for 11 a.m.

“Our biggest goal is now to grow as much as we can the rest of the way, take games from teams that are looking to make playoff runs, and see what our guys can do,” Downey said.
