The Fortuna girls and St. Bernard’s boys took a break from conference action on Monday and both won their games.
The Huskies hosted Fort Bragg in Scotia and prevailed 66-28, improving to 15-5 on the season as they get set for a key Big 5 showdown against Del Norte on Wednesday night.
The SB boys hosted St. Vincent de Paul and won 63-50, ending the Mustangs’ six-game winning streak and stretching their own unbeaten run to 15 straight.
Monday’s game at St. Bernard’s was a rematch of last year’s North Coast Section championship game, which the Crusaders also won.
“St. Vincent de Paul came to play,” said St. Bernard’s head coach Pat Shanahan, who added “You could tell from the beginning they wanted revenge.”
The visitors used that drive to get the better of exchanges early in the night and held a slender two-point lead (19-17) after the first quarter.
However, the Crusaders took control in the second and opened up a double-digit lead going into halftime.
“So proud of our fight in the second,” Shanahan said. “The boys made some adjustments to take a 10-point lead at halftime.”
Garrett Shanahan, who is quickly establishing himself as one of the most dangerous all-around players in the H-DNL this season, finished with a double-double in the win, scoring 19 points and pulling down 12 rebounds.
The junior standout also had six assists.
Carson Costa also continued to impress for the home team and also scored 19 points to go with six rebounds, while teammate Liam Dyer added a double-double, finishing with 17 points, 10 boards and five assists.
“We battled through some injuries and foul trouble and were able to keep them at bay the rest of the game,” Pat Shanahan said. “It was a gritty win for us. We’ll take it and now look to Thursday and Hoopa.
Tyler Hinrichs added five rebounds, five assists and four steals, while Trenten Hagler chipped in six rebounds.
With the win, the red-hot Crusaders improved to 17-1.
Thursday’s game against Hoopa will take place at St. Bernard’s with tip off set for 7:30 p.m.

A last-minute switch in venue because of a power outage at Fortuna High didn’t affect the Huskies, who made the short trip to Scotia to entertain the Timberwolves and posted a 38-point win.
Fortuna started strong and led 13-0 midway through the opening quarter, before stretching the advantage to 22 (39-17) by halftime.
Nine of the 10 Fortuna players scored in the win, including freshman Kaleya Parkinson, who finished with a team-high 14 points.
Junior Olivia Scilacci also impressed for the Huskies and added 13 points, while senior Jaydyn Dalton chipped in 10 points.
Next up, the Huskies will host Del Norte on Wednesday night in a pivotal Big 5 game.
Both teams are currently 1-2 in conference play and tied for third in the standings and the final berth for the Dick Niclai tournament.
