By Ray Hamill — The H-DNL girls teams continue to set the standard in the North Coast Section rankings this week.

While the league’s boys have just two teams ranked in the top 50, the HDN girls have five in the top 50 and seven of the nine programs are ranked in the top 56 out of 150 programs.

Leading the way are the Arcata Tigers, who are No. 14 after dominating their first three Big 5 opponents by a combined 83 points, including a 61-23 win over McKinleyville on Friday night.

The Tigers are also No. 3 in NCS Division 3 and No. 8 among D-3 schools in California.

A thrilling 76-74 win at St. Bernard’s on Saturday night keeps the Tigers at No. 1 in this week’s Humboldt Sports Power Rankings, one spot ahead of the Crusaders, who are also impressing this season.

The SB girls are also getting plenty of respect in the NCS, coming in at No. 21 overall this week and holding steady at No. 1 in Division 5 and No. 4 among D-5 schools in California.

The Eureka girls are No. 3 in our Power Rankings after a big win over Fortuna on Friday night, and they are tied for the conference lead with Arcata, whom they play in a pivotal showdown on Wednesday night.

The Loggers also made a jump in the NCS, moving up four spots to No. 25 overall and up three spots to No. 5 in Division 3.

Despite a big loss to Euerka on Friday night, the Fortuna girls are ranked higher than the Loggers in the NCS, coming in at No. 22, and the Huskies are also ranked No. 7 in Division 4 and No. 4 in this week’s Humboldt Sports Power Rankings.

Rounding out our Power Rankings are the Ferndale girls, who hold steady at No. 5 after a big win over Hoopa in Little 4 action on Friday.

The Wildcats are also No. 48 in the NCS and No. 2 in Division 6, as well as No. 4 among D-6 schools in California.

Also in the NCS rankings, Del Norte is No. 52, followed by McKinleyville at No. 56, Hoopa at No. 88 and South Fork at No. 126.
