Fortuna teams continue their preparation for conference play

The Fortuna boys and girls basketball teams both enjoyed non-tournament wins at home on Friday night, as each gets set for its conference opener next week.

The girls played Timberline out of Washington and won 55-36, stretching their winning streak to six straight games and improving to 12-3 on the season.

The boys hosted Kelseyville and overcame a sluggish start to win 54-38 while improving to 5-10.

“It was apparent we hadn’t played a game in two weeks,” Fortuna boys head coach Norm Sotomayor said.

Despite that, the Huskies opened up an 18-9 lead after the opening quarter and were able to keep the Knights at bay on the way to the victory.

Rawland Bones led the Huskies with 12 points, while teammate Gavin Mayberry added 11 points and Jack Stacy chipped in nine points.

And Sotomayor believes his players are finding their groove as they get set to tip off the Big 5 at Arcata on Thursday night.

“I liked our tempo and how we moved the ball,” Sotomayor said. “We are getting there just in time for league.”

So too are the Fortuna girls, who have enjoyed a very impressive pre-conference schedule and are one of the hottest teams in the H-DNL with just three loses in December.

“Overall, it has been a successful start to the season,” head coach Tom Chapman said. “The team has continued to improve. We know our conference schedule is going to be very challenging, but we are focused on continued improvement and competing.”

Timberline is coached by Fortuna alum Gary Viggers and the Washington players and their families shared dinner with the Huskies while they were in town.

“It was a wonderful opportunity for the teams to bond,” Chapman said.

Freshman Kaleya Parkinson continued her impressive start to her high school career with another big performance for the Huskies, who were playing their first home game in over a month and came out ready to go in front of their home fans.

Parkinson finished with a team-high 16 points and seven rebounds, while teammate Evalynn Little also continued to impress and added 11 points and eight boards.

“The team controlled the game from the opening tip,” Chapman said. “Timberline is a young team but well coached. They did a good job of limiting our runs and making baskets in key moments.”

The game was close for much of the night, but the hosts would pull away late, going on a 12-0 run in the fourth quarter.

“Our team responded well and made plays down the stretch,” Chapman added.

Macee Marquez added eight points and four rebounds for the Fortuna girls.

Next up, the Huskies will make the short trip to play neighbors and rivals Ferndale in their final conference tune-up on Tuesday night, before returning home to host Arcata in their Big 5 opener on Friday.
