VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS — Aerial attack lifts Crusaders to Big 4 title

By Ray Hamill — You know you’ve had a good game passing the ball when you have two players finish with more than 100 yards receiving.

On Saturday afternoon, the St. Bernard’s Crusaders took care of business in their regular-season finale, rolling to a comfortable 35-21 win over Del Norte.

The victory clinched a share of the Big 4 championship with the Fortuna Huskies, who defeated Eureka 39-0 the previous night at Husky Field.

The Crusaders scored touchdowns on their first four possessions of the afternoon and led 28-0 four minutes into the second quarter.

And they succeeded with a dynamic passing game that will give them plenty in momentum heading into the North Coast Section playoffs and will make them a dangerous proposition moving forward.

Junior quarterback Trenten Hagler is enjoying a breakout season and is thriving in his third year with the team.

Having split time at the position in each of the last two years, Hagler is the full-time starter this fall and has taken full advantage of the opportunity.

Hagler enjoyed one of his best games yet against Del Norte, completing 29 of 41 passes for 293 yards and four touchdowns.

He also led the Crusaders in rushing yards with 25.

Four different SB receivers had at least one TD catch, and two had over 100 yards in receiving.

Hagler completed two touchdown passes to Kuron Devlin, who had 102 yards receiving on eight catches and did an excellent job keeping this feet in bounds on both of his scoring receptions.

Check out some first-half highlights above, including both of Devlin’s TDs.

Braedon Simpson also had a TD catch — from Tyler Hinrichs on a fake field goal attempt — as did Garrett Shanahan and Quentin Ikeya.

Hinrichs also had a god day receiving the ball and finished with nine catches for a team-best 105 yards.

The Crusaders will now turn their attention towards the NCS playoffs, which kick off this weekend.

St. Bernard’s is one of four local teams to qualify and is seeded No. 1 in Division 6.

The Crusaders open against No. 8 San Rafael on Saturday afternoon at 1, and a win could see them face off against co-Big 4 champion Fortuna in the section semifinals next week.

Fortuna is seeded No. 4 in Division 6 and opens at home against Petaluma on Friday night at 7.

Ferndale also has qualified for the postseason and is seeded No. 2 in Division 5.

The Wildcats open at home against No. 7 Arroyo on Saturday at 1.

The South Fork Cubs also have qualified for the Division-2 eight-player playoffs and are seeded No. 2 in their four-team bracket.

  1. Have the Crusaders gotten their running backs off of the injury list? I know that from the start of the season one or two running backs were out with injuries.
