COLLEGE BASKETBALL — CR teams both now 2-1; Jacks get set for openers

Both Cal Poly Humboldt basketball teams will tip off their seasons this week, while both College of the Redwoods teams will also be in action.

New CPH men’s head coach DJ Broome and his players will travel to San Rafael for a pair of games, including their season opener against Western Washington on Friday evening at 5 p.m.

The Jacks, who were 2-1 in pre-season scrimmages/exhibition games, will also play Dominican on Saturday night at 7:15.

The Cal Poly Humboldt women, meanwhile, will open the new season at home, welcoming Northwest Nazarene to Lumberjack Arena on Friday night.

The Jacks, who won both of their preseason scrimmage/exhibition games, will also play Central Washington on Saturday night.

Both of the Humboldt women’s games start at 7:30.

The CR men and women will be on the road.

The Redwoods men, who dropped to 2-1 with a lopsided 118-59 loss at San Francisco over the weekend, will try to bounce back when they travel to play at Hartnell on Saturday at 3 p.m.

The CR men will also play at Cabrillo on Sunday at 3 p.m.

Alfonso Medina led the team in scoring at San Francisco and finished with 10 points.

The CR women played three road games over the weekend, winning two of them.

Redwoods opened with a 61-47 win at Napa Valley on Thursday, before falling 72-47 at Modesto on Friday and then bouncing back to beat Merced 73-57 on Saturday.

Former Arcata Tiger Nora Talty is enjoying a good start to the new season.

The sophomore guard scored a team-high in points in all three games, including 21 points against Merced, to go with seven rebounds and two assists.

Another former Tiger, Mayleah Jackson, also is impressing early in the season and added 15 points, seven steals and four assists on Saturday, while Paityn Erlenbush finished with 11 points and two rebounds.

Mia Hoogendoorn had a good all-around game and finished with eight points, nine rebounds, four steals and two blocks, and Olivia Railsback chipped in eight points, six steals, four rebounds and three assists.

Talty also had 14 points and six rebounds against Modesto, while Cadence Young had six points.

The CR women will play games at San Mateo against Chaffey on Friday (5 p.m.) and Santa Ana on Saturday (noon).
