It’s shaping up to be a breakthrough season for Eureka High softball in more ways than one.
After managing just two wins over the past two springs combined, the Eureka varsity team has been far more competitive this year with three wins already.
But that’s just half the story for the program.
The Eureka JVs closed out their short spring season with a doubleheader at Ukiah over the weekend and won both games by scores of 11-10 and 24-18.
With the two victories, the young Loggers improved to 9-3-1.
Daylin Brown and Rilynn Flanagan posted the wins in the circle and both pitchers got plenty of run support from their teammates, much as they have all season.
The hard-hitting Loggers averaged almost 16 runs a game in their nine wins and scored in double digits in all of them.
And they succeeded with several players making big contributions, including Janaiyah Robinson and Tasi Maualuga, who each finished the spring with an impressive average of .421 at the plate.
The speedy Bella Wilson led the team in runs scored (23) and stolen bases (10), while Brown had team-highs in RBIs (21) and triples (three).
The hard-hitting Robinson had a team-high two home runs, while Maualuga added a home run and a team-best five doubles.
Brown, Flanagan and Distefino all featured in the circle.
A busy Brown led the way with six wins and just one loss and an ERA of 6.89, 66 strikeouts and 42 walks in 41 innings.
Flanagan (2-1) had an ERA of 8.83 with 16 strikeouts in 23 innings, while Distefino (1-1) finished with 15 strikeouts and 12 walks in 12 innings.
Other players who impressed for the team included Haydin Edmonds, who averaged .333 at the plate and scored six runs, as well as Zoey Bazzano (.269 with 11 runs), Ayla Kingsang (.200 with 10 runs), Kyle Log (.143 with 11 runs) and Cadence Biane (.100 with two runs).
Freshmen Ella Moxon, Bella Holbrook and Lola Distefino all split time between JV and varsity through the first month of the campaign and have been making their presence felt on both teams.
The young Loggers were coached by head coach Blake Dunbar.
