Halfway through their conference schedule, the College of the Redwoods women are beginning to build some momentum on the soccer field.
On Tuesday, the Redwoods women traveled to Shasta and came away with a 3-1 win, their second in conference play.
Goals by Raigan Brooks and Paige Rodgers gave the visitors a 2-0 lead at halftime, and they would add to their tally on a second-half strike from Miriam Munoz Guerrero.
“I think we did well as a team,” head coach Juan Perez said. “As a team, we performed and we got the win, which is what matters at the end of the day.”
With the win, Redwoods improved to 2-4 in the Golden Valley Conference and 5-10 overall, and while the team is still a work in progress, Perez liked a lot of what he saw from his players on Tuesday, as they tried some new things out on the field.
“We’ve been implementing different things that we’ve been working on in practice, communicating and moving together as a team, and it was good seeing the girls implement those things in a game,” the coach said.
“I’m happy with this group. We have a lot of freshmen this year and they’re really buying into the culture we have with the program. The girls are really getting along with each other and we’re improving.”
In addition to the goal scorers, who did a good job taking advantage of their opportunities, Carolynn Hurd also had a good game for the visitors while playing multiple positions.
“Every single position we put her in, she shined,” Perez said of Hurd, who saw time at center back, left back and in midfield. “She played really well.”
The Redwoods women will be back in action on Friday when they host Siskiyous in a conference game on the new all-weather field at CR, and Perez is hoping to see his players get a measure of revenge against a team they barely lost 1-0 to on the road three weeks ago.
“I want us to finish strong and continue to build on the culture that we have and continue to develop good habits,” he said. “Moving forward, we’re going to have good foundation.”
Friday’s game, which will be the team’s annual Pink Game, is set for 1:30 p.m.
