The College of the Redwoods men’s wrestling team enjoyed a breakthrough victory on the mats recently and is coming off a strong showing at the weekend Modesto Invitational.

The CR traveled for the tournament and placed eight as a team, with three individuals placing in their weight divisions.

Former Arcata standout Isaiah Bell has begun his college career in impressive fashion after a big career with the Tigers and led the way at Modesto, placing fourth at 149 pounds.

Likewise with former Eureka Logger Knolin Callendar, who placed fifth for CR in the 285-pound division.

Rounding out the CR placers at Modesto was Jacob Torres, who has been one of the team’s most impressive performers through the early season.

Torres matched Bell with a fourth-place finish at 157 pounds.

As a team, CR scored 48.5 points.

The strong showing at Modesto follows the team’s recent 33-18 dual meet victory over Shasta, the team’s first home dual meet win since the program was reinstated three years ago.

The CR men are 1-1 in dual meets this fall, having also lost to Sierra 45-7.

They began the season at the Dave Pacheco Invitational in Sacramento on Sept. 19, with Torres getting the new campaign off to an impressive start and placing fifth at 157.

Redwoods will continue the season at this weekend’s Northern Regional Dual tournament in Rocklin.
