By Ray Hamill — It was a special quarter of football by a special team.
On Saturday afternoon, the Ferndale Wildcats cruised to their sixth win of the season and they achieved it with about as dominating a first quarter as you’ll see all year.
Of course, this is nothing new for the Wildcats, who have thoroughly dominated every opponent this year and appear to be getting better with each game.
On Saturday, Ferndale outscored McKinleyville 49-0 in the opening quarter and would go on to win the game 79-0.
The Cats scored touchdowns on all seven first-quarter possessions and remarkably had just 12 offensive snaps on the way to scoring those 49 points.
Check out our video highlights of all seven early touchdowns above.
And they succeeded with contributions from throughout the lineup.
Luke Dixon found the end zone twice in that dominating quarter, as did Garyn McClurg.
Tanner Pidgeon also scored on a 43-yard run, Precott Langer found the end zone on a 13-yard run, and Rolland McClrug capped the dominating period by breaking free down the side of the field for a 51-yard TD.
(Correction — On Saturday, Humboldt Sports incorrectly reported that latter TD was scored by Garyn McClurg.)
Langer and Rolland McClurg each also had a first-quarter interception, while Tristen Titus had a fumble recovery at the McKinleyvllle three-yard line to set up one of Dixon’s TDs.
Our highlights also include a big pass from lineman Jacob Kurwitz to Rolland McClurg to set up another TD.
With the win, the Wildcats improved to 2-0 in the Little 4 and 6-0 on the season, and they have yet to be scored on, outscoring their opponents 378-0.
