Eureka’s Zwald posts low round of the day in HDN golf at Baywood

Another week, another Eureka Logger leads the way in H-DNL girls golf.

On Monday, Eureka’s Sophia Zwald paced the field in the second round of league play at Baywood Golf & Country Club in Arcata, shooting a 102.

Zwald’s round was an impressive nine strokes better than the field, as she continued her fast start to league play, following last week’s fourth-place finish.

And that was enough to give the Loggers the team win in a tight race with Del Norte.

The Eureka girls posted a combined score of 492 on the day, just one stroke better than Del Norte (493).

Defending league champs Arcata had the third best team score (501), followed by McKinleyville (523) and Fortuna (533).

Del Norte teammates Bria Larson and Jaylee Keeling tied for the second-best individual score of the day with identical rounds of 111, while Eureka’s Hailey Forster also continued her impressive start to league play and placed fourth.

One week after posting the low score in the opening round of league action at Benbow, Forster shot a 114 at Baywood.

McKinleyville’s Abby Allen rounded out the top five scores on the day with a 119.

Arcata teammates Sabrina MacDonald (122) and Julia Omaha (123) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, with Fortuna’s Macee Marquez (124), Arcata’s Shayla Hoffman (125) and McKinleyville’s Jaxin Bartoo (126) rounding out the top 10.

Forster remains atop the season standings, two strokes ahead of second-placed Keeling.

The third round of league play takes place next Monday at the Redwood Empire Golf & Country Club in Fortuna.
