By Ray Hamill — The first Saturday of the new high school and college football season is going to be a busy one here on the North Coast.
The new high school season kicks off on Friday night with three H-DNL teams in action.
One of the games that had been scheduled for Friday night, however, has been pushed back to Saturday.
The McKinleyville Panthers were originally scheduled to open against Fort Bragg at Mack High on Friday.
But with the Timberwolves unable to make the trip that night due to transportation issues, that game will now take place on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m., preceded by the schools’ JV teams playing at 11:30 a.m.
That means McKinleyville High School will host a quadruple-header of games on Saturday, with the Arcata and Eureka JV and varsity teams also playing there on Saturday night.
Also on Saturday, St. Bernard’s opens the new season against Clear Lake at Crusader Field, with the varsity game at 2 p.m.
Rounding out a busy day for local teams here on the North Coast, College of the Redwoods also opens the new campaign on Saturday afternoon, playing Sacramento City College at the Redwood Bowl at 1 p.m.
Friday night, meanwhile, features an all-local matchup in Crescent City with Del Norte hosting Hoopa.
Also on Friday night, Fortuna travels to open the new season at St. Helena.
Ferndale and South Fork have opening-weekend byes.
