The Redwood Empire 11-year-old All-Stars will try to rebound on Sunday after dropping their opening game at the Section tournament in Chico on Saturday morning.
The District 26 champs fell 11-1 to Central Chico.
But a memorable season is not done yet, and two wins in the losers’ bracket would see them play for a championship at the four-team tournament early next week.
“Tomorrow they might be more relaxed and we’ll see what we can do,” manager Bob Manchin said. “Our goal is to fight back through the losers’ bracket.”
Despite the loss, there were some bright spots for Redwood Empire.
Logan Mayberry hit a triple and would score the team’s only run in the third inning.
His teammate Jace Weigand also made his presence felt at the plate and finished 2-for-2.
The RELL All-Stars will now play Sutter Butte on Sunday at 1 p.m.
And they can take some inspiration from the Eel River 8-10 All-Stars, who also dropped their opening game at their Section tournament but battled back to win an elimination game on Saturday morning.
“They’ve just got to play their game,” Manchin said. “That’s what to comes down to. We’ve got to make the plays and put the ball in play, and if they can that everything should come together for them.”
All four teams at the Section tournament were undefeated at their District tournaments.
Last month, the RELL players went 3-0 at the District 26 tournament, including a 23-9 win over Klamath Trinity in the championship round.
