Red-hot Eagles 19Us stretch their winning streak to five straight

The Humboldt Eagles 19Us are finding their groove at an opportune time.

On Sunday, the Eagles swept two games from Sonoma County Legion at Belotti Field in Eureka, winning 9-5 and 14-2 in five innings.

The two wins stretched the team’s winning streak to five straight games.

Branson Dobrec got the start on the mound in the opener and pitched six strong innings for the win, before Alex Jimenez came in to replace him and closed out the game.

Dobrec allowed three unearned runs on just three hits and one walk and struck out six.

The hard-hitting Eagles had some big hits in the win, including triples by Joseph Forbes-Cappiello, Finn Warner and Cole Zeller and a double by Lyle McKinnon.

Cooper Ohlsen got the win on the hill in game two with a very efficient performance.

Ohlsen, who is enjoying a good summer with the local American Legion club, threw a five-inning complete-game on just 52 pitches and held the visitors to just two runs, only one of which was earned.

“He attacked the zone well and allowed zero walks, which is the kind of outing that gives us a great chance to win,” Eagles head coach Tommy Gale said.

Ohlsen allowed six hits and struck out two.

And he received plenty of offensive support, with seven Eagles players combining for 16 hits.

Jimenez, who has been among the team’s most consistent all-around players this summer, led the way at the plate and finished 4-for-4 with a triple, a double and five RBIs.

Del Norte’s Aidan Rice also had a big day at the plate and was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored, while Zeller finished 2-for-3 with a triple, a walk, two RBIs and three runs.

Garrett Levitt also had two hits in the win, including a double, while Ohlsen, Warner and Michael Manzi each added a hit.

Next up, the Eagles will travel for the Firecracker Classic tournament in Fairfield, which gets under way on Thursday and runs for five days.

The Eagles had a scheduled road doubleheader against Willits postponed on Saturday and are hoping to reschedule.
