LEGION ROUNDUP — Tournament to cap busy week for local clubs

Photo by Ray Hamill/Humboldt Sports – The Southern Humboldt 76ers wlil be one of four local teams in action at the eight-team Northern Humboldt Giants tournament this weekend.

The local American legion baseball season is building momentum, with all of the local teams in action this week.

On Tuesday evening, the Humboldt Eagles 19U team got the better of the Southern Humboldt 76ers 16-6, while on Monday the Eagles 17Us traveled to McKinleyville High to play the Northern Humboldt Giants and won 6-2 in eight innings.

The Giants also played the Wild Cactus on Monday and won 15-3, and followed that out a doubleheader sweep over the Phoenix Pirates on Wednesday, winning 5-2 and 14-4.

The Eagles 17Us also played Brookings Harbor this week and prevailed 17-2.

Brayden Bermers, Ryder Mitchell and Grayson Ramsey all finished 3-for-4 against Brookings Harbor, with the latter driving in six runs.

Mitchel also had four RBIs and Bermers two.

Scotty Brogan also made some noise at the plate and was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Matt Pleasant pitched three innings in the win and struck out six, with Allen Kane throwing two innings and striking out four.

Two young Eureka High pitchers combined on the mound against the Giants.

Kyle Giacone got the start and struck out two in 3.1 innings, with Bermers getting the win in relief, throwing 3.2 innings and striking out one.

Mitchell was 2-for-3 in that win, while Nolan Neff finished 1-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs.

Tate Saso led the Giants in the loss, which was the team’s first of the summer, finishing 2-for-4 with a double, while Rhythm Green added a double and Hunter Craper and Bowdy Hicks each also had a base hit.

Joe Tanno threw three innings of one-hit ball for the Giants and struck out four, with Landon Williams also impressing in relief with two hitless innings.

The hard-hitting Saso had a big day at the plate in Wednesday’s doubleheader.

He finished 2-for-3 with a triple and a double in game one and was 2-for-3 with a double in game two.

“Saso has been doing great, especially the last couple of games,” Giants head coach Eric Agliolo said. “He’s driving the ball to the gap.”

Williams, Green, Bryson Phillips and Dominick Miller each also had a base hit in game one, with Green throwing four strong innings for the win on the mound.

Green gave up two runs on two hits and struck out five.

Miller pitched three scoreless innings in relief to close out the game and allowed just one hit while striking out four.

Tanno and Jake Brunner led the Giants at the plate in game two, finishing with two hits apiece, while Williams added a double.

Carper, Hatcher Matson, Blake Santos and Bode Reininger each also had a hit in the win.

Reininger got the win on the mound, throwing four strong innings and allowing just two hits while striking out four.

Gavin Anderson threw one inning in relief to close out the game.

Many of the local teams will now turn their attention to this weekend’s Northern Humboldt Giants tournament, which gets under way on Friday and runs for three days at McKinleyville High School.

The Eagles 17Us open against Sutter at 10 a.m., followed by the Giants and Red Bluff at 12:30 p.m., the Wild Cactus and Siskiyou at 3 p.m. and the Southern Humboldt 76ers and Sonoma at 5:30 p.m.

Sunday’s championship game is set for 5:30 p.m.
