By Ray Hamill — The summer baseball season is under way and building momentum, and that is reflected in our weekly awards this week.
The first District 26 All-Star tournament took place this week at Fortuna’s Newburg Park and it was a good week for McKinleyville.
The McKinleyville Junior League All-Stars took home the district championship with a resilient team performance.
After dropping their opening game of the tournament to the host Eel River All-Stars, the young Mack players rallied to win five straight elimination games.
And that run included two wins over Eel River on back-to-back nights in the championship round.
On Thursday night, they rallied from an early deficit to win 8-5 and set up a true championship showdown on Friday night.
And with momentum on their side, the Mack Juniors cruised to a comfortable 16-0 win to take home the title.
Which makes them a worthy choice for our team of the week.
Our athlete of the week honors, meanwhile, go to a Crabs player who is fast establishing himself as a key part of this year’s team.
Adam Enyart is enjoying an outstanding start to the new season for the local collegiate summer team and that was evident once again this week.
Enyart hit three home runs in last weekend’s series against the Fresno A’s, and he also posted two wins on the mound this week, both in relief.
The Bakersfield native, who plays college ball for Saint Mary’s, has been a two-way standout for the Crabs through the first two weeks of the season and he leads the team in home runs with four and in wins on the mound with three.

Enyart has hit the ground running this summer and has been one of the club’s most impressive players through the opening two weeks.
The two-way standout is averaging .414 at the plate, which leads the way for the team’s regular starters, with two doubles four home runs and a team-best 16 RBIs.
On the mound, he has appeared in three games and posted wins in all three of his appearances — just 5.1 innings total — with an ERA of 3.38.

TEAM OF THE WEEK
McKinleyville Junior All-Stars
A resilient McKinleyville team clearly learned from its mistakes.
After dropping their tournament-opening game to Eel River, the young Mack All-Stars battled back to win five straight elimination games on the way to claiming the championship.
That run included an 8-5 win over Eel River in Thursday’s championship round, a game in which they trailed by two runs early.
And they followed that with a dominating 16-0 win over Eel River in a true championship game on Friday night.
It was another big week for the McKinleyville Little League program, which has been the most impressive locally for the past few years and is showing no signs of slowing down.
