The local youth baseball postseason tournament season got under way last week with the District 26 Junior and Senior League Tournament of Champions.

On Saturday, at Belotti Field in Eureka, the two tournament championship games took place.

In the Junior decider, the Eel River A’s capped a dominating season with a 14-4 win over the Southern Humboldt Giants and closed out the spring campaign 13-0.

The Senior League championship game was a lot closer and it took extra innings to separate the two contenders.

But when all was said and done, it was McKinleyville’s Evans Mechanical that prevailed, defeating Eel River 8-6 in eight innings.

The young McKinleyville players rallied from a five-run deficit to force the extra innings.

Mack tied the game in the top of the seventh on a triple by Crew Hicks and a suicide squeeze by Teoh Arredondo.

The McKinleyville players broke the tie with three runs in the top of the eighth, with Hicks hitting another triple.

Hacher Matson (Evan’s Mechanical) and Teyler Bailey (Eel River) got the starts on the mound and both pitchers impressed.

McKinleyvile also defeated the Klamath Trinity Braves and Arcata in tournament play.

A busy few weeks for the local youth teams continue this weekend with the Junior League All-Star tournament getting under way on Saturday.

The tournament will be hosted by Eel River and played at Newburg Park in Fortuna.
