Joyner named to all-GVC team; Grammer ties home run record

By Ray Hamill — Former St. Bernard’s Crusader Bode Joyner was one of seven College of the Redwoods baseball players to receive all-conference recognition on Saturday.

Joyner, who enjoyed an outstanding spring season with the team, was the only CR player named to the Golden Valley Conference first team.

His teammates Seth Grammer, Oscar Rudman and Justin Powell were all included on the all-conference second team, with Drew Franklin, Tenoch Tapia and Miles Oliver all receiving an honorable mention.

Five of the seven CR players recognized are former H-DNL standouts.

Joyner, who graduated from St. Bernard’s in 2021, averaged .347 at the plate with four home runs and 30 RBIs, including three hits in a two-game series at Butte to close out the season this week.

Joyner also had 10 doubles this year.

Grammer, meanwhile, tied the program record for most home runs in a single season with his eighth of the spring this week.

The former Eureka Logger finished 2-for-5 with four RBIs and the home run in a 13-7 loss at Butte on Thursday.

The CR men would bounce back to defeat the Roadrunners 3-1 on Friday.

Grammer, who graduated from Eureka in 2023, tied the program record set by Blake Browning last year.

His eight home runs also were tied for the conference lead this spring.

Grammer hit .300 for the season with 28 RBIs and also had six doubles and two triples.

Rudman, meanwhile, led the team in average this year (.356) and had 23 RBIs, while Powell batted .315 with 25 RBIs.

Tapia, who graduated from McKinleyville last year after helping to lead the Panthers to a Big 5 championship, averaged .264 at the plate with 17 RBIs, while Franklin and Oliver led the staff on the mound.

Oliver, a 2023 Arcata High graduate, appeared in 14 games and pitched a team-high 64.2 innings.

He also posted a team-high five wins.

Franklin, a 2024 Fortuna graduate, was the second most used pitcher on the staff this season with 14 appearances and 58.1 innings.

The former Huskies’ star had three wins, including a one-hit complete-game victory at Butte on Friday.

After struggling for much of the season — the team won just three of 18 games in February and March combined — the CR men got hot down the stretch and closed out strong with six wins in their final eight games.

They finished 9-16 on conference and 12-22 overall and placed fifth in the GVC.

Joyner, Powell, Rudman, Grammer and McKinleyville’s Tyson Bragg each had two hits in Thursday’s loss to Butte.

The Redwood men, however, responded with a solid performance in their season finale, overcoming an early one-run deficit with two runs in the top of the second and an insurance run in the fifth in a low-scoring showdown.

Rudman had two hits in the win, with Grammer, Powell, Joyner, Jack Irvine and Kurtis Jackson each adding a base hit to round out a seven-hit team performance.

Franklin threw nine strong innings for the win on the mound, giving up just six hits and one walk.
