Eureka boys dominate again in third league track and field meet

By Ray Hamill — Eureka’s Xavier De la Rosa continued this impressive spring in track and field with two wins for the second straight week at the third H-DNL meet of the spring at McKinleyville on Wednesday.

The standout junior, who is coming off breakthrough season at the varsity level on the basketball courts, placed first in both the high jump and triple jump, setting a new PR in the latter with a jump of 42’ 2.5”.

His big day helped lead the Eureka boys to a team victory, as the Loggers won six different events on the way to scoring 199 points and winning for the second straight week.

Arcata placed second with 133, followed by Del Norte (130), Fortuna (59) and McKinleyville (40).

Fortuna’s Kavi Bolden also won multiple events, placing first in he 100m and 200m.

Del Norte’s Landon Balent placed second in the 100m, followed by Eureka’s Michael Leen in third, while Leen took second in the 200m, followed by teammate Luis Garcia-Anderson in third.

Other Eureka winners on the day included Garcia-Anderson in the 300m hurdles, Chase Jimenez in the 1600m, John Stephen Powers in the pole vault and sophomore Bo Landry, who set a PR of 16.63 seconds on his way to victory in the 110m hurdles.

The Arcata boys had three wins on the day, including sophomore Eoin McGoldrick, who set a PR of 2:03.31 on his way to placing first in the 800m.

Arcata’s Skyler Collenberg edged Del Norte’s Sebastian Espinoza for the win in the shot put, with the latter edging Colleberg for the win in the discus.

Rounding out the wins for the Tigers, the foursome of Palavi Vainuku, Christopher Bogar, Miguel Obezo and Levi Browne were first in the 4x400m relay.

The Del Norte boys won the other two relays, with Colby Moore, Balent, Santiago Velasco and Deken Hanks winning the 4x100m race and Michael Haapala, Ian Stanley, Daniel Gomez and Coulter Chilcott first across the line in the 4x800m race.

Del Norte senior Dylan Rodriguez also had a day to remember, with a PR of 9:52.05 on his way to winning the 3200m, while Fortuna’s Anthony Klobucar won the 400m with a PR of 53.29 seconds, barely edging Eureka’s Everett Docherty, who also had a PR time of 53.91 seconds.

The Huskies won the 100m, 200m and 400m.

McKinleyville’s Orphao Nowell-Grande rounded out the individual winners on the day, placing first in the long jump.

Ferndale’s Anthony Kasso also impressed and placed second in both the triple jump (with a PR of 40’ 4”) and the 110m hurdles (with a PR time of 16.94 seconds). 

The fourth and final regular-season league meet will take place at Del Norte on Tuesday, with the league championships scheduled for May 10 at Fortuna.
