The next generation of St. Bernard’s basketball standouts is building momentum as they get set to bring their talents to the high school courts.
The SB eighth-grade blue boys team finished this past season with a very impressive 29-1 record, a campaign that included five tournament championships.
Over the past two winters, this group of young players suffered just three losses, with two of those coming against a very good Bidwell school from the Central Valley, which won this year’s Crescent City Jaycees AAA division championship.
And the local eighth graders succeeded with a team-first mentality.
“This is a very unselfish group of basketball players,” coach Rob Sirrine said. “Nobody was an ‘I’ player and everyone was always looking to make the right decision on the court.”
The talented roster included Tyson Marshall, Kade Pinochi, Jarren Biondini, Maddox Boham, Jack Omey, Mason Long, Teyler Bailey, Calahan Figas, Weston Levy, Miles Sirrine and Brady Freeman and was also coached by Pete Levy.
And, according to the coaches, this was a group of players that put in a lot of work on the path to success.
“They are a group of hard workers who wanted to get better, and they developed as basketball players and as young men this season,” Sirrine said.
The Knights took home tournament titles from the Kelseyville, McKinleyville, Fortuna, St. Bernard’s and Bay City Classic tournaments.
They also placed second in the Crescent City Jaycees AAA division this year.
Figas, Levy and Miles Sirrine were all named to the Jaycees all-tournament team.
“We are looking forward to their future,” SB Middle School Athletic Director Cliff Hart said.
