H-DNL BASEBALL — As usual, local teams scrambling early for games

By Ray Hamill — Just like clockwork, the unpredictable spring weather here on the North Coast is predictably affecting the local softball and baseball schedules.

Numerous games have already been either postponed or canceled as the H-DNL teams scramble to get in some valuable game time before conference play begins early next month.

But here’s an update for local fans on how all of the league teams have been faring early in the season as well as an update on what’s in store this weekend.

With the Fort Bragg baseball tournament canceled this week, Arcata, St. Bernard’s and Fortuna will play each other in a round robin format at the Bear River field on Saturday.

Arcata (2-1)

The Tigers have early-season victories over Las Plumas (11-0) and Oroville (7-0) at last weekend’s Foothill tournament, with an 8-4 loss to the host school sandwiched in between.

The Tigers are scheduled to play Fortuna (11:45 a.m.) and St. Bernard’s (2 p.m.) at the Bear River field on Saturday.

Eureka (1-2)

The Loggers dropped a pair of games at Ukiah, 6-1 and 6-2, and have a win over Santa Rosa (9-8).

They have been affected by the weather more than most teams with four games canceled this week, including doubleheaders against Foothill and Rancho Cotate.

They are not scheduled to play again until April 1 when they will travel for a doubleheader at Oakmont High.

Del Norte (1-3)

The Warriors have lost early-season games to Orland (6-4), Chico (13-0) and Clear Lake (10-3) and have beaten Lassen (1-0).

New head Andy Petersen has taken over the Huskies this season.

They spilt a doubleheader against Hoopa last weekend, winning game one 6-3 and dropping game two 15-4.

They also dropped their season opener against Kelseyville, 10-0.

The Huskies are scheduled to play St. Bernard’s (9:30 a.m.) and Arcata (11:45 a.m.) at the Bear River field on Saturday.

McKinleyville (5-0)

The defending Big 5 champs have hit the ground running this season with five straight wins, including three victories over University Prep by scores of 12-7, 10-7 and 12-2.

They also defeated Las Plumas 3-2 and Red Bluff 1-0 at last weekend’s Foothill tournament.

A scheduled Thursday doubleheader at home against Foothill was canceled.

Next up, they are scheduled to host Las Plumas next Friday at 1:30 p.m.

The defending Little 4 and North Coast Section champs have yet to play a game this year.

Scheduled games this weekend against Upper Lake and Mesa Verde have been canceled.

Hoopa (1-1)

New head coach Aaron Williams and the Warriors split a doubleheader at Fortuna last weekend.

The lost game one 6-3, but the bats came alive in game two, which they won 15-4.
