The Sequoia FC U17 girls made their debut as a team over the weekend at the Juventus College Showcase tournament.

And while the results didn’t all go their way, head coach Taylor McMillin-Bianucci said the team has a lot of potential as the local girls travel soccer team prepares for their NorCal Premier Spring League opener in two weeks.

“It was a great weekend playing as a team for the very first time,” the coach said. “And this was a wonderful opportunity for us to focus on the tactical side of the game a little bit more.”

The newly formed team lost its tournament opener to Gold Country United by the narrowest of margins (1-0) and followed that with a 2-1 defeat to Deportivo Barcelona.

McKinleyville’s Abigail Pimentel scored Sequoia’s only goal of the game against Deportivo.

In their third game of the weekend, the Sequoia girls tied PCU 0-0, before closing out the weekend with a 3-0 loss to the same team.

“Our goals for the weekend were possession, building out of the back and creativity in the final third, and this will continue to be our focus this spring,” McMillin-Bianucci said. “I’m pleased with the improvement from game to game this weekend, and it was clear that this group has some wonderful potential.

“I am excited to be coaching such a bought-in group of athletes.”

In addition to Pimentel, the team also includes Ada Kinziger, Amabel Miranda, Ava Deyhim, Braelyn Frank, Darby Moore, Elliana Sellars, Gavilan Loetterle, Grace Pimentel, Hazel Ray, Josey Kimber-Roach, Jozlyn Dahl, Luciana Buchheister, Peyton Graney, Sonja Vevoda-Wahlig, Valentina Midence, Vivian Adams and Zalayshia Velazquez.
