Sensational Little leads Fortuna girls to doubleheader sweep

The Huskies continued their fast start to the new softball season with a doubleheader sweep over Willows at Fortuna High on Saturday.

And junior Evalynn Little continued her blistering start to the new campaign with another big day at the plate.

The Huskies took the opener 15-1 and followed that with a 22-0 victory in game two, both in five innings, while improving to 5-0 .

Senior Isabel Sanchez also had a good day, pitching a five-inning two-hitter in game one, while allowing just two walks and striking out 11.

And she got plenty of help from her offense, most notably Little, who is this week’s Humboldt Sports Athlete of the Week.

Little led the way at the plate in the opener and finished 3-for-4 with three doubles and five RBIs, while Sanchez was 2-for-3 with a double and a triple.

As a team, the Fortuna girls had 13 hits in that game, including six doubles and a triple.

Also impressing for the home team were Hailee Thompson (2-for-3 and three RBIs) and Mia Tiedeman (2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs), while Olivia Hayes, Keeley Ryles-Baker, Sophia Castillo and Naiya Castillo each also had base hits, with the latter hitting a double.

The second game was more of the same.

Junior Addie Collenberg took the circle and pitched a complete-game five-inning shutout, allowing only one hit and one walk and striking out four.

And she got plenty of help from a reliable Fortuna defense that did not commit any errors while turning a pair of double plays, including one to end the game.

At the plate, the Huskies racked up 14 hits, with Little again leading the way and finishing 3-for-5 with two home runs, a triple and six RBIs.

The outstanding junior now has three home runs on the season.

Over the two games on Saturday, she finished 6-for-9 with three doubles, a triple and the two home runs, as well as 11 RBIs.

Five games into the new season, Little is hitting .778 (14-for-18) and already has 20 RBIs.

Sanchez also continued to impress in game two and finished 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs, while Thompson had two hits, Naiya Castillo was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI, and Collenberg was 3-for-4 with three RBIs.

Hayes and Sephora Machado each also had a base hit.
