Pascascio, McFarland impress for Redwoods at Shasta meet

Former Fortuna Husky and Humboldt Sports Big 5 Boys Athlete of the Year Russell Pascascio is quickly adapting to college competition in track and field.

This past weekend, Pascascio and his new College of the Redwoods teammates traveled to compete at the Cody Beaumont Invite at Shasta College and placed first in a pair of events.

The impressive freshman took top spot in the triple jump with a jump of 12.39 meters, and also finished first in the high jump with a jump of 1.95m.

Pascascio also was a part of the CR men’s 4x100m relay team, which placed second, along with Jordyn Bowers, Disuuri Suidi and Fabian Warner.

Bowers rounded out a good day for him personally with a first-place finish in the 100m, crossing the line in a time of 11.16 seconds.

Also impressing for the Corsairs, Garberville’s Chase McFarland set a new CR record and a state qualifying mark on the way to victory in the hammer with a throw of (143’ 4”).

Del Norte’s Bryson Price placed third in both the men’s hammer (138’ 2”) and the shot put (43’ 2”), as well as sixth in the discus (121’ 11”), while former McKinleyville Panther Kylar Tiller was fourth in the hammer with a throw of 127’ 5”.

CR’s Violet Cayton also impressed in both the javelin and hammer.

Clayton placed second in the javelin (89’) and third in the hammer (132’ 6”).

In the distance races, McKinleyville’s Aidan Davis placed second in the 1500m with a time of 4 minutes, 37 seconds, while Fortuna’s Gabby Crosswhite was fourth in the 1500m in a time of 5:40.  

Davis also was fourth in the 800m (2:15), while teammate Santino Thomas finished sixth (2:18) and Crosswhite placed third in the women’s 800m (2:42).

Another former Fortuna Husky, Maya Brightman, also had an impressive day on her way to placing second in both the women’s 100m (13.54 seconds) and the 200m (29.06), while teammate Violeta Gutierres finished second in the 100 hurdles in a time of 19 seconds flat.

Suidi also finished sixth in the men’s long jump (5.51m).
