The Lumberjacks kicked off the new college softball season with a doubleheader sweep in Hawaii on Tuesday.
The Cal Poly Humboldt women defeated No. 22 Lewis 10-0 on the 10-run rule in their opener and followed that with a 6-1 win over Ferris in game two.
It was the program’s first opening-day sweep since 2019 and the Jacks’ first 10-run rule victory in a season opener since 2017.
“I’m incredibly proud of the effort and determination shown today from this team,” CPH head coach Megan Corriea said. “We faced some tough competition, but our teamwork and resilience carried us through. Let’s keep this momentum going through the rest of the week and continue to improve every chance we get.”
Alyssa Smokey got things going in the opener with an RBI double in the first inning and the Jacks would take firm control of the game with a seven-run fourth.
The Jacks had seven hits in the win, including extra-base contributions from Smokey, Vanessa Saltos and Alyssa Ramirez.
Gaige Garcia got the win in the circle, tossing three shutout innings while allowing just one hit and striking out three.
Smokey dominated in the circle against Ferris State, allowing just one hit over six shutout innings and striking out four.
She was backed by a productive Humboldt offense that racked up 10 hits, including a key two-run double by Santos in the third inning.
The Humboldt women will be back in action when they play a doubleheader against Hawaii Pacific on Thursday.
