It was a wild day for the local college basketball teams on Saturday, as the Cal Poly Humboldt men stunned conference leaders Cal State San Dominguez and the College of the Redwoods women got their first conference win.
The Jacks delivered a thrilling 90-80 upset over the Toros, ending their unbeaten streak in CCAA play while extending their own winning streak to three games and taking over sole possession of fourth place in the conference standings.
The Redwoods women traveled to Lassen and won 59-38, improving to 1-3 in the Golden Valley Conference.
“It feels great to finally get our first conference win,” CR head coach Bree Northern said. “We came to Lassen and took care of business. I thought the ladies did a good job of being prepared and focused for the game.”
Former Eureka Logger Aniah Gaither was instrumental in the win and finished with a double-double.
Gaither scored 14 points and added 13 rebounds.
Former South Fork Cub Caidence Young also impressed and finished with 14 points.
“Caidence Young did a great job knocking down shots from the outside,” Northern said.
Ferndale’s Kyla Albee added 13 points and “played a solid all-around game,” according to the coach.
Nora Talty added nine points, Moriah Bowles chipped in five points and Kimberly Lewis finished with four points.
At Lumberjack Arena, meanwhile, the Jacks continued to surge up the conference standings.
Last week, they sat 10th out of 12 teams and they are now all alone in fourth with a conference record of 6-6 (10-7 overall).
Trailing 37-33 at halftime, Humboldt came out firing in the second half, outscoring the Toros 57-43 for the half and shooting a scorching 55 percent from the field, including seven 3-pointers.
“I am proud of our guys for staying focused and competing for the entire 40 minutes,” CPH head coach Chris Tifft said. “Our ability to battle back in the second half and close out the game versus the first place team in our conference shows great character and mental toughness.”
Freshman Marsai Mason led the way for the home team and finished with 23 points, five rebounds and five blocks.
Six Lumberjacks scored in double figures in the balanced offensive display.
Rob Diaz III added 13 points, while Kyle Frelow recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Josiah Sanders added 14 points off the bench, Kalib LaCount had 11 points and Aidan Fowler chipped in 10 points.
The CR men and Humboldt women did not fare quite as well.
Redwoods played at Lassen and fell 71-66 to drop to 3-2 in the GVC, while the Humboldt women lost their fifth straight game falling 93-59 to Dominguez Hills.
