The Arcata Tigers were pushed closer than at any other stage in this year’s Big 5 on Friday night.
But the conference leaders would hold on late despite a big performance by Del Norte and they escaped Crescent City with a crucial 72-60 win.
A big part of that was the performance of senior standout Luke Moxon, a former Big 5 MVP.
Moxon scored 14 points for the visitors and had two huge fourth-quarter dunks to help inspire his teammates and the Arcata fans just as the Warriors were cutting into the lead.
One of them was a windmill dunk, which some Arcata fans are calling the play of the season, and it’s difficult to argue that assessment.
Arcata head coach Kellen Maynard described the play as the best dunk he’s ever seen in a high school game.
“No question,” Maynard told Humboldt Sports. “In live action and full speed? Not a dunk competition dunk, but a legit in-the-game-flow dunk. It was awesome.”
Check out video highlights of both dunks above, including Maynard’s reaction to the windmill dunk at the bottom of the screen.
The win keeps the Tigers atop the Big 5 standings, and with a record of 5-0 they need just two more wins to guarantee at least a share of this year’s championship.
