CR men bounce back on Sunday; Redwoods women fall to Solano

The College of the Redwoods men’s basketball team ended a disappointing weekend on a high note with a 98-59 win over Simpson JV at the Coach Tregs Classic on Sunday.

The Corsairs dropped their first two games in tournament play — losing 83-75 to Mendocino on Friday and 75-65 to Southwestern Oregon on Saturday — and are now 8-3 on the season.

Marcos Rosales led the way for CR in Saturday’s game and finished with 19 points, while teammate Isai Sow added 14 points and Brandon Lucas chipped in 10 points.

The Oregon men started the game fast, opening up an 18-1 lead, and they carried a 39-29 advantage into halftime.

The Corsairs to their credit battled back after the interval and cut the deficit to three with two minutes remaining, but that was as close as they would come.

“Overcoming the deficit we put ourselves in proved insurmountable, but the effort we displayed in scratching our way back into the game deserves applause,” CR head coach Ryan Bisio said. “I admire the way we didn’t splinter under such incredible tension.”

After their first two-game losing streak of the season, the CR players would bounce back with an impressive win to close out the three-day tournament on Sunday.

No stats were immediately available for that game.

The Corsairs will face a big challenge later this week when perennial state powerhouse City College of San Francisco travels to CR on Friday night.

Game time is set for 6 p.m.

The CR women, meanwhile, split two games at the Shasta crossover over the weekend.

The Corsairs defeated Yuba 64-47 on Friday night before falling 82-78 in a high-scoring showdown against Solano on Saturday.

Five different CR players scored in double digits in the loss, including Kyla Albee, who finished with a team-high 17 points.

Moriah Bowles also impressed at the offensive end and finished with 15 points, while Alia Prentiss and Caroline Dieker each had 11 points.

Nora Talty added 10 points and Cadence Young and Aniah Gaither each chipped in six points.

CR is now 4-5 on the season.
