By Ray Hamill — Friday night will be a big one for local football fans with two huge games on tap.
In high school action, the history-making Arcata Tigers will try to extend their season and keep a memorable campaign going when they travel to Winters High School to play the Warriors in the 6-AA Northern Regional championship game.
Closer to home, College of the Redwoods will host a bowl game for the third straight year as they look to win a postseason game for the second straight season.
And we’ve got all the details of where and how to follow the action in both games.
The Corsairs will play West Hills Coalinga in the 2024 Grizzly Bowl game, which will take place at the Redwood Bowl, with kick off set for 6 p.m.
Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for seniors (60+ years of age) and children.
CR athletic passes will not be accepted, but Associated Students of College of the Redwoods is providing free tickets to the first 150 students that arrive with their student ID at the gate.
Gates open at 5 p.m.
CR is 7-3, while West Hills is 6-4.
For fans unable to attend, the game will be streamed live and broadcast live on local radio.
Fans can catch the action online through the CR football YouTube channel, or follow on local ESPN affiliate at 107.3 FM and 1340 AM.
The Corsairs hammered Hartnell 63-0 in the 2023 Grizzly Bowl for their first postseason win in three decades and the local community college will be hoping for more success this weekend.
“I am very proud that we can participate in another Grizzly Bowl,” CR President/Superintendent Keith Flamer said in a press release. “This is a wonderful accomplishment and a tremendous testament to the hard work and dedication of our coaches and student athletes.”
Arcata’s game will also be streamed live from Winters, which is about 30 miles west of Sacramento.
That game gets under way at 7:30 p.m. and can be watched through the NFHS Network.
The Tigers made school history last week by winning the program’s first-ever North Coast Section championship in the sport and they will be looking for more success this weekend when they play in a first-ever Northern Regional game.
They are the seventh H-DNL team to play in a NorCal championship in football in nine postseasons.
The winner of Friday’s game will advance to play for the 6-AA state championship in Southern California next weekend.
Only three H-DNL teams have ever won a state championship in football.
St. Bernard’s has won two titles in 2015 and 2019, while Fortuna was state champion in 2017 and Ferndale won a state title last year.
Tigers fans are also planning a big send off for the team as they leave Arcata on Friday morning.
