South Fork boys impress in season opener at Fort Bragg

The South Fork Cubs tipped off the new boys basketball season in style with an impressive 74-69 win over Fort Bragg in their foundation game.

This year’s team features a dangerous and deep offensive lineup and several players opened the new campaign strong in the win.

“It was our first game of the season and I’m super proud with how this group played,” head coach Taylor Morrow said. “I feel like we have a really solid foundation, especially with a bunch of new faces.

“But they’re executing our game plan and playing with intensity.”

Influential senior Wesley Way, who enjoyed an outstanding fall on the football field, has quickly adjusted to the basketball court and helped set the tone for the team in the win.

Way led all scorers with 19 points, including 10 of the Cubs’ 22 points in the fourth quarter to help keep the Timberwolves at bay.

Zakunda Fansler also impressed in the win and added 17 points.

Fansler was particularly effective from downtown and scored five 3-pointers.

Trevor Hunt chipped in 14 points and sophomore Martin Navarrete finished with 12 points.

The Cubs could be a dangerous team in this year’s Little 4 with a lot of players that can score.

“That’s one of the things I think that makes us a very good team,” Morrow said. “This year I have four guys or more that can score in double digits.”’

The Cubs led 41-25 at the break and continued to keep Fort Bragg at bay in the second half.

“We made some good adjustments in the second half, but we kept making plays and maintained our lead throughout the whole game,” Morrow said.

Travis Way and Gavin Gellman each also impressed in the win.

Travis Way “was a menace on defense,” according to the coach, while the sharp-shooting Gellman added eight points, including a pair of 3s.

“(Gellman) was kind of our Swiss army knife, doing a little bit of everything,” Morrow added.

The win was achieved without the injured Shawn Schmidt, who should give the Cubs even more weapons when he returns.

Next up, the Cubs will play at the Redwood Classic, which gets under way next Wednesday.
