Weekend NCS championship game to be broadcast live on local radio

By Ray Hamill — A pair of H-DNL schools will play for a North Coast Section championship and a place in this year’s state football playoffs this weekend, and one of the games will be broadcast live on local radio.

In Division-6, the Arcata Tigers will play for a first-ever NCS championship when they take on Miramonte at McKinleyville High School.

The game will kick off at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast live on The Beat 95.1 FM

Longtime announcer Tag Wotherspoon will call the action from McKinleyville and will be joined in the booth by College of the Redwoods head coach Jason White.

The pregame show gets under way at 12:45 p.m.

The Tigers, who have overwhelmed their first two playoff opponents, are the top seeds in the bracket after going 9-1 during the regular season.

Miramonte, which is now 6-6, is seeded No. 2.

The Metadors defeated No. 6 seed Benicia 7-0 in last weekend’;s semifinal after also getting the better of Newark Memorial 43-23 in their playoff opener two weeks ago.

The Tigers rolled to a dominating 69-34 win over No. 5 Petaluma in their semifinal at the Redwood Bowl last Friday night.

The dominating top seeds also got the better of Bethel 52-12 in their postseason opener the previous weekend.

The Ferndale Wildcats will also play for a section championship on Saturday night.

The No. 2 seeds in the Division-7 bracket will play No. 1 Moreau Catholic at Hayward High School with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
