Mixed fortunes for Redwoods basketball over the weekend

Both College of the Redwoods basketball teams were in action over the weekend, with the men’s team remaining hot and placing first at the Ed Boyle Invitational tournament at Mendocino College and the women’s team dropping a pair of games at the Sierra Tournament.

The CR men won all three of their games in Ukiah, opening with a 77-67 win over American River on Thursday and following that with an 86-75 win over Los Medanos in Friday’s semifinal and a close 68-67 win over the host team in Saturday’s final.

Former Fortuna Husky Alfonso Medina hit a game-winning layup with under three seconds remaining in Saturday’s championship game, as the Corsairs stretched their winning streak to six straight and improved to 7-1.

Medina was named to the all-tournament team, along with teammate Mason Mottashed, while CR’s Brandon Lucas was named tourney MVP.

“This was an absolute slugfest,” CR head coach Ryan Bisio said of Saturday’s game against Mendocino. “Dirty, grimy basketball on day three of the tournament. Proving to ourselves we can win these types of games builds confidence.

“We could never find our footing offensively all night and didn’t shoot the ball well, but made winning plays down the stretch. Alfonso put the exclamation point in it.”

Josh Neal scored a team-high 14 points in the win, while the always-dangerous Mottashed and Medina each added 11 points.

The Ed Boyle tournament win was the second in the Corsairs’ last four appearances there.

Friday night’s win came against a Los Medanos team that had handed CR its only loss of the season earlier in the month.

Lucas led CR in scoring with 18 points, including six 3-pointers, while teammate Isai Sow added 17 points and Medina finished with 14.

Ty Dahlin and Mottashed also impressed and chipped in 11 points each.

Redwoods hit 19 3s in the win.

Next up, the Corsairs will host their annual Coach Tregs Classic, which gets under way a week from Thursday.

Redwoods opens against Mendocino (4-2) at 7 p.m.

The CR women, meanwhile, dropped to 3-4 on the season with their two losses.

According to head coach Bree Northern, it was a good learning experience for the players.

In Friday’s game, turnovers were a problem against a tough Sierra press.

“I thought we played really well throughout the game as a whole,” Northern said. “However, we struggled in the first half with their press, which led to quite a few turnovers on our end.”

The Corsairs picked up the level of their game after the interval.

“We were able to come out strong in the second half and played our style of basketball, but just fell short at the end,” the coach added. “Sierra is a great team and I am so proud of the ladies for continuing to fight during the whole game and never giving up.

“It is really special being able to see the growth that our team makes after each game we play.”

Saturday’s loss came against a San Francisco team that is ranked No. 9 in the state.

“I am proud of my team for never giving up this weekend,” Northern said. “We faced some really good teams and the ladies continued to play their hearts our. I cannot wait to see what they accomplish the rest of the season.”

The CR women will be back in action n Dec. 6 when they play Yuba at a neutral venue.
