What a difference a year makes.

Through the first half of the 2026 local high school softball season, the Eureka Loggers have been one of the stories of the year so far, and that continued to be the case on Wednesday.

Last year, the Eureka girls lost all 12 of their Big 5 games, but this year they’re off to a 2-1 start in conference play, following a victory over Fortuna on Saturday with an 8-2 win against Arcata on Wednesday.

The Loggers started fast, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning and stretching the advantage to seven in the third.

After that there was no way back for the Tigers, who dropped to 0-3 in the Big 5.

Once again Eureka won with some strong pitching and defense, especially from centerfielder Violla Kingsang, who had another big performance and has hit the ground running in the Big 5.

Kingsang had three big catches for the home team and one of the highlight plays of the day when she threw out a runner at third after catching a fly ball.

Mackenzie Wolff also had a good day in the circle for the Loggers, allowing just one earned run on seven hits and no walks and striking out two.

The junior team ace allowed her defense make the plays behind her, and her teammates backed her up as they continue their impressive season.

Five players had multiple hits for the Loggers, who also hit the ball well, including Jaycee Childress, who finished 3-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs.

Bailey Brown (2-for-4 with a run), Macy Secor (2-for-4 with a run), Tiffany Harris (2-for-4 with a double) and Megan Secor (2-for-4 with an RBI and a run) each also had multiple hits in the win.

Abby Tyner led the Tigers at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with a double and the junior also drove in both of her team’s runs.

Ali Mitchell, Nallia Meyer, Peyton Miller and Tucker Houston each also finished 1-for-3 for Arcata, which dropped to 6-5 overall.

The Arcata players also played well defensively and had just two errors on the day.

“They just seemed to put the ball in better spots than we could,” Arcata head coach Jason Miler said of the Loggers. “Every ball we hit they made the play and we just couldn’t get any real momentum going all day.”

Bella Holbrook and Ella Moxon each also had a base hit for Eureka, with Moxon also driving in two runs.

Eureka is now 5-7 overall.

Next up, the Loggers will try to continue their winning ways when they travel to play a doubleheader at McKinleyville on Saturday, while Arcata will have a weekend bye before playing at Ferndale on Monday.
