By Ray Hamill — The North Coast Section fall soccer playoffs will kick off this coming week with 11 of the 15 H-DNL teams included.
The brackets were announced on Sunday and the Eureka Loggers received the top seed for the girls Division-1 tournament as they look to secure a fourth straight section championship.
Fortuna is the highest-seeded H-DNL boys team, and the No. 2 Huskies are one of five local schools included in the 15-team Division-1 boys bracket.
All five of the H-DNL boys teams included will kick off their postseason campaign on Wednesday, including three here on the North Coast.
The league champion Huskies will play No. 15 Summit Tamalpais at Fortuna at 7 p.m.
The Del Norte boys, who placed second in this year’s H-DNL, are seeded No. 5 and will open against No. 12 Lower Lake on Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 in Crescent City.
The Arcata Tigers are seeded No. 6, but will travel for their opener against No. 11 Fort Bragg, also on Wednesday night at 7.
The Timberwolves get to host that game because they are North Central League I champions.
McKinleyville, meanwhile, is seeded No. 7 and wil host No. 10 Gateway on Wednesday at 7 p.m., while No. 9 Eureka will open in San Francisco against No. 8 The Bay School, also on Wednesday night at 7.
If the Loggers win their opener, they will play a quarterfinal at No. 1 Head-Royce of Oakland, which has an opening-round bye.
If McKinleyville and Fortuna both win their openers on Wednesday, they will meet in an all-local quarterfinal next weekend.
The girls Division-1 bracket has just nine teams, with all four of the H-DNL schools that are included receiving an opening-round bye.
Dates, times and venues have not yet been announced for all of next weekend’s girls quarterfinals.
No. 1 Eureka will play the winner of the only first-round game between No. 8 Middletown and No. 9 Upper Lake.
No. 2 Fortuna will play No. 7 Clear Lake, No. 4 Arcata will play No. 5 Willits and No. 6 Del Norte will play No. 3 Credo.
The Warriors, who won a first-ever league championship this fall, may not get to host that game as is usual for league champions because Credo is also a league champion and a higher seed.
Two other H-DNL programs — St. Bernard’s and South Fork — also are included in the girls Division-3 tournament.
The Crusaders are seeded No. 3 and have an opening-round bye in the five-team bracket.
They will open against No. 2 Technology in the semifinals next weekend.
The Cubs are seeded No. 5 and will open against No. 4 Calistoga at St. Helena High School in a quarterfinal showdown on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
The last four NCS Division-3 girls tournaments have been won by Little 4 teams.
