One night after winning their season opener against Napa Valley at their own four-team crossover tournament, the College of the Redwoods women fell 74-69 in overtime to Santa Rosa JC in basketball action on Saturday afternoon.
And first-year head coach Bree Northern was more than happy with the fight her players displayed over the weekend, especially on Saturday.
“They played incredibly hard,” Northern said. “We were down by 11 points at one point and they fought back and we forced overtime.
“They never gave up, and I’m so proud of them for continuing to push through. They never hung their heads.”
Former South Fork Cub Caidence Young led the Corsairs in scoring in Saturday’s loss and finished with 21 points, while Alia Prentiss impressed for the second straight night and added 16 points.
“Caidence did a great job,” Northern said. “For her being a freshman she did a great job facilitating the ball (on Friday) and she found her scoring today.
“Alia did well. She played hard the entire game. She really brought us a different energy off the bench.”
Aniah Gaither also impressed this weekend and finished with 11 points in Saturday’s loss, while sophomore Moriah Bowles had a good weekend shooting the ball and scored a team-high 20 points in Friday’s 61-53 win over Napa Valley.
Gaither, according to Northern, “did a great job battling inside” on Saturday.
Next up, the CR women will play at Contra Costa next Saturday.
The CR men’s basketball team was also in action on Saturday at the Live Like Geno Tip Off Tournament at Napa Valley.
After opening with a four-point win over Sac City on Friday night, the CR men fell 75-70 to Los Medanos in tournament play on Saturday evening.
Houston King led the Corsairs with 22 points, while Isai Sow added 14 points and Mason Mottashed finished with 10.
“Historically Los Medanos has been our kryptonite and they were again tonight,” CR Head coach Ryan Bisio said. “This matchup is stylistically never comfortable for us. Credit to them, we simply have’t cracked the code yet.”
For the second straight night, the Corsairs shot just 50 percent from the free throw line, but they did have 3-pointers for the game.

The Corsairs will try to bounce back when they take on Napa Valley on Sunday at 2 p.m.
“This weekend won’t be defined by this disappointing outcome tonight, but how we respond to this disappointment tomorrow against the host team,” Bisio added.
In college wrestling, meanwhile, the CR men’s team traveled on Saturday to compete at the Lassen College Open in Reno.
Jared Williams led the way for Corsairs and placed second in the 165-pound bracket.
CR’s Frank Valente also enjoyed a good day and placed fourth at 157.
Next up, the Corsairs will host Santa Rosa JC in a dual meet at CR on Wednesday.
That dual meet gets under way at 7 p.m.
