BOYS SOCCER — Huskies claim at least a share of H-DNL title; Arcata, DN remain in the mix

The Fortuna Huskies need just a tie in their final game at Arcata on Tuesday afternoon to claim this year’s H-DNL championship outright in boys soccer,

A 6-1 win over Eureka on Saturday saw them move clear of Arcata atop the standings and claim at least a share of the title, with the Tigers having a bye this weekend.

However, with Del Norte defeating St. Bernard’s 11-0 on Saturday, three teams remain in the hunt as we head into the final day of action, and there could yet be a three-way tie for the conference title.

If Arcata can beat Fortuna and Del Norte beats South Fork on the final day, then all three schools would close out conference play with 18 points each.

Also on Saturday, the McKinleyville Panthers defeated South Fork 2-1 in Miranda.

The big game of the day, however, was between Fortuna and Eureka, with the Huskies pulling away late for the lopsided win.

“It was a physical match, but we settled into it,” Fortuna head coach Daniel Holmes said. “I’m proud of the boys.”

Jesus Herrera was instrumental in the win and scored four of his team’s goals with an outstanding performance in front of goal.

Kevin Herrera also scored in the win, as did Humberto Flores-Lopez.

A second-half red card for the Loggers saw a 2-1 game get away from them late.

There were three red cards in the game, including two for Eureka and one for Fortuna.

Isaiah Herbst scored Eureka’s only goal of the game from the penalty spot.

“I’m proud of my team’s fight and the intensity they brought,” Eureka head coach Tommy Learmouth said. “It was a physical game today played by both teams.”

Learmouth gave the Huskies credit for the way they played.

“Fortuna played better in possession than we did,” he said.

At Miranda, meanwhile, in-form senior Wesley Woven scored the game winner for the Panthers, who closed out league play with a record of 6-4-2.

Becker Rine also netted for the visitors.

“It was not a great game, but that’s a hard place to play,” McKinleyville head coach Ryne Deppe said. “South Fork played well with a lot of heart and intensity.”

Tuesday’s game at Arcata is set for 4 p.m.
