On Saturday night, the Arcata Tigers continued to roll in a Little 4 football showdown in Hoopa with a 41-6 win over the Warriors.
The win keeps the Tigers unbeaten on the season, as they improved to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the Little 4.
Now the fun really begins.
The Tigers are tied atop the L4 standings with the Ferndale Wildcats, who also took care of business this weekend with a 56-0 win at McKinleyville on Friday night, leaving both schools with identical records.
The two conference frontrunners, who are the top-two ranked teams in the H-DNL right now, will face off twice over the next four weeks in pair of games that will likely decide the fate of this year’s Little 4 championship.
And if those matchups are anything like last year’s, then local football fans won’t want to miss them.
The first of the two showdowns will be hosted by Arcata at McKinleyville High as part of the school’s homecoming festivities next Friday night.
The second will take place in Ferndale on the final day of the regular season, and it’s pretty likely that final game will decide the Little 4 title, one way or the other.
So far, both teams have impressed and have proven to be the best two teams in the area with a combined 5-0 record against Big 4 opponents.
The Tigers have been No. 1 in the Humboldt Sports Power Rankings for five straight weeks, while the Wildcats have been right on their heels at No. 2 for the past three weeks,
On Saturday, as expected, Arcata was too strong for an improving Hoopa team, which also fell to Ferndale a week ago.
The Tigers scored a pair of touchdowns in the opening quarter and led 21-0 at halftime.
They enjoyed d big third quarter and added 20 points to their tally to lead 41-6 going into the fourth quarter.
After that, there was no way back for the host school, which dropped to 0-2 in the Little 4 and 2-4 on the season.
No stats were immediately available for the Tigers, but we’ll have much more on the top-ranked team in the H-DNL next week as we look ahead to their big clash and what will be the most anticipated game of the season so far here on the North Coast.
Hoopa quarterback Allen Kane completed 4 of 11 passes for 75 yards, a touchdown and an interception in the loss.
Hoopa added 66 yards rushing against arguably the top defense in the league, including 41 yards on nine carries by Kane.
Receiver Brandon Romero scored Hoopa’s only touchdown of the game on a reception from Kane and finished with 65 yards receiving on three catches.
Donald Hostler also had 18 yards rushing for Hoopa on six carries and one reception for 10 yards.
The Warriors will be hoping to get back to winning ways when they play at McKinleyville next Saturday night.
