JV FOOTBALL — Cats, Crusaders and Huskies continue to roll

By Ray Hamill — Three local JV football teams continued their fast start to the new season this past weekend.

St. Bernard’s, Ferndale and Fortuna all won their respective games to go to 2-0 on the new season and continue to build momentum ahead of conference play.

One week after beating Fort Bragg at Ferndale High, the young Cats traveled to Fall River and came away with a 33-0 win over the Bulldogs.

The Fortuna Huskies, meanwhile, traveled to McKinleyville High to play Arcata and won 21-6, while the St. Bernard’s Crusaders hosted Willits in their home opener and also had a shutout victory, winning 12-0.

Those three schools are among the four unbeaten JV teams in the H-DNL.

One week after opening their season with a shutout victory against Arcata, the Eureka Loggers headed east to play Shasta and tied the Wolves 7-7 in temperatures over 100 degrees.

The Del Norte JVs, meanwhile, got their first win of the new season, beating Ashland in Crescent City by a score of 28-6.

The Warriors, who fell at Fortuna in their season opener, are now 1-1.

The McKinleyville Panthers had a bye this past week.

Several of the H-DNL JV squads will be in action again this coming weekend.

Among the games here on North Coast, the Panthers will try to hand the Huskies their first loss of the campaign when they face off at Husky Field on Friday night at 5.

The young Tigers will try to get their first win when they travel to play Del Norte, while St. Bernard’s will host Biggs on Saturday at noon.

The young Eureka players will also be in action when they travel to Newark Memorial on Friday evening, while Ferndale and Hoopa are scheduled to have byes.
