By Ray Hamill — Tatianna Colegrove was one of the most dominating high school pitchers in the H-DNL while playing for the Hoopa Warriors, but she has taken her game to a new level since graduating high school last year.
And she showed exactly how much she has improved this past weekend in leading the Mad River MIST 18U softball team to a tournament championship in Medford.
The 2023 Hoopa High graduate dominated in the circle, getting five of the MIST’s seven tournament wins at the Bring It On! Tournament.
And that gets her the nod for one of our athletes of the week awards.
But she wasn’t the only local player to impress this past week.
Another former H-DNL standout, Keenan Morris, also had a big week as he continues to shine for the Humboldt Crabs.
On Wednesday night, Morris enjoyed one of his best games of the summer and helped lead the Crabs to a 9-3 win over the Athletic Edge Express.
The 2021 Eureka High graduate finished 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, three RBIs, two runs and a stolen base.
Not a bad night’s work for the local standout.
Our team of the week, meanwhile, goes to a young local travel soccer club that dominated last week on the way to clinching a tournament championship at the Junction City Gold Cup.
The Emerald FC U12s boys impressed at both ends of the field on their way to the championship, scoring 24 goals in four games while allowing just one.
And that’s the sort of performance that will get any team recognized.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Tatianna Colegrove
Mad River MIST
Earlier this year Colegrove earned all-state recognition after a stellar spring playing for Mendocino College.
And she has carried that form into the summer season, where she has been one of the MIST’s most consistent and dominating performers over the last two months.
In addition to her five wins in the circle last weekend, Colegrove also displayed her power at the plate and hit two home runs in tournament play.

Keenan Morris
Humboldt Crabs
One of the most popular teammates and coachable players on any team he plays on, Morris has enjoyed a standout summer playing for the Crabs.
And he has done so at the plate, on the bases and on defense.
In addition to his big performance on Wednesday, Morris is batting .231 for the season with three home runs, three doubles 17 RBIs and 17 walks.
And he has done so in limited action, appearing in 29 of the Crabs’ 47 games after battling back from injury earlier in the campaign.
