The Wild Cactus Baseball won their first-ever 19U game on Wednesday, as they get set for this week’s Humboldt Eagles tournament.
The newly-formed Wild Cactus defeated the Australia Colts 6-4.
The all-star Wild Cactus roster features mostly St. Bernard’s players, as well some local college standouts and a couple of standout eighth-graders.
“This was our only tune-up game before the Humboldt Eagles tournament,” head coach Matt Tomlin said. “The boys looked good and I’m excited to see how they play against good competition the next four days.”
Michael Manzi got the win on the mound, pitching 1.2 scoreless innings and striking out two.
His St. Bernard’s high school teammate Luke Brunton also continued to shine.
Brunton, who is enjoying a big summer season, pitched 5.1 innings and gave up four runs on six hits and three walks against the traveling international lineup.
Garrett Shanahan, who is also enjoying a strong summer season, led the Cactus bats and was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, while Manzi was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
Former Eureka Logger Caden Vance, who plays collegiately at Umpqua Community College, also made some noise at the plate and was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Wild Cactus opens the four-day Eagles tournament on Thursday when they face off against the Colts B team at Belotti Field across from the Redwood Acres at 2:30 p.m.
The Eagles tournament features 12 teams, six each in the 17U and 19U brackets.
