Garrett Shanahan had a big day on the mound and Tyler Maples came up with a clutch hit, as Wild Cactus Baseball swept a Saturday doubleheader against Brookings to close out an impressive weekend with four wins in four games.

Just one day after they swept two games against the Southern Humboldt Patriots, Wild Cactus took game one 5-3 and game two 9-7.

Shanahan threw four scoreless innings for the win in the opener and gave up just one hit and one walk while striking out six.

“Shanahan was absolutely dominant,” head coach Matt Tomlin said. “He had control of all three of his pitches and he pitched a gem.”

Tyler Hinrichs threw three innings in relief to close out the game, allowing four hits and three walks and striking out three.

Hinrichs also had an impact at the plate and led the Wild Cactus offense, finishing 2-for-2 with two RBIs.

Tyson Marshall also was 2-for-2 and scored a run, while Michael Manzi was 1-for-1 with two walks and displayed his speed with three stolen bases on his way to scoring three runs.

Brody Gaser went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

In game two, Maples broke a 5-5 tie in the fourth inning with a big two-out, two-RBI base hit to help spur his team to victory.

Manzi remained hot at the plate and finished 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, as well as scoring two runs.

“I am super proud of the team for a great weekend,” Tomlin said.

With the weekend wins, Wild Cactus improved to 6-3 on the summer.
