
The Northern Humboldt Giants capped a busy few days with am American Legion doubleheader split against the Southern Humboldt 76ers in Fortuna on Tuesday night.
Fresh off a road trip to Oregon over the weekend, in which they went 2-2, the Giants won a high-scoring opener on Tuesday by a score of 13-6, before dropping game two 3-1 in five innings.
With the split the Giants are now 9-5 on the summer.
“I think their’e playing great, everyone’s having a good time and it seems like everyone’s contributing,” Giants head coach Eric Agliolo said.
Several players contributed on Tuesday night, including Rhythm Green, who led the way at the plate in the opener and finished 3-for-3.
Tanner Kees, Ben Lukens and Mateo Reiman each also was 2-for-3, while Bode Reininger, Lyle McKinnon and Hunter Carper each added a hit.
McKinnon got the start on the mound and threw five innings, with Tate Saso and Reininger each throwing an inning in relief.
Carper got the start on the hill in game two and pitched three strong innings, allowing three runs on three hits and striking out two.
Green threw one inning in relief in a game that was called early because the opener had gone so long.
Kees, Green, Saso and Jake Brunner each had a hit in the loss.
No stats were immediately available for the 76ers.
Over the weekend, the Giants enjoyed a productive trip to Oregon.
They lost their opening game to Roseburg 3-1, before defeating Ashland 11-9.
On day two, the Giants split a doubleheader against Central Point, taking game one 15-2 and dropping a close game two 8-7.
Among the offensive highlights for the weekend, Kees was 4-for-5 with a double against Ashland, while Carper was 3-for-5 with a double.
In the same game, Reininger was 2-for-3 and Cole Zeller and Lukens each added a double.
Carper also pitched five innings for the win against Ashland, allowing just two runs on four hits and striking out two.
Lukens and Reiman each two hits in the opening game against Central Point, while Tanno and Carper each added a double.
Tanno got the win on the hill, allowing just two hits in four innings, before Anthony Cardenas came in to close out the game.
In game two against Central Point, Carper and Lukens each had two hits.
Green pitched five striking innings in the loss, allowing three hits and striking out three, with Brandon Romero closing out the game.
Next up, the Giants will host an eight-team, three-day tournament at Arcata High School, beginning on Friday.
The 76ers and Wild Cactus Baseball, another local club, will both feature in the tournament, with games starting at 10 a.m. on each day.
The championship game will take place on Sunday at 5:30 p.m.
