Big fourth inning lifts Crabs to series-opening win against the Knicks

The Humboldt Crabs stretched their winning streak to five straight with a 13-4 win over the Novato Knicks at the Arcata Ball Park on Friday night.

The Crabs broke open a tight game with 10 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and never looked back as they improved to 8-2.

The Knicks dropped to 1-3.

Mistakes cost the visitors, who out-hit the Crabs 11-4 but walked 11 batters and committed four errors.

McKinleyville’s Cameron Saso, who was making his third straight Friday night start, got the win on the mound.

Saso threw 4.2 innings and allowed nine hits and two walks while striking out five.

Andrew Overland threw 4.1 scoreless innings in relief, giving up just two hits and a walk and striking out 10.

The two Crabs pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts.

Felix Javier provided the offensive highlight of the game with a grand slam home run in the bottom of the fourth inning on his second at-bat of the inning.

It was Felix’s third home run of the early season, which ties him with Victor Castaneda for the team lead.

It was the Crabs’ ninth home run of the summer.

Javier finish the night 1-for-3 with two walks and scored three runs.

Trent Keys led the Crabs at the plate and was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run, while Billy Ham also had a base hit.

The two clubs will continue their weekend series on Saturday afternoon with first pitch set for 2:30 p.m.

They will close out the series on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. before the Crabs hit the road next week for a six-game trip with games at Lincoln and Healdsburg.
