By Ray Hamill — The Ferndale Wildcats are getting used to this.
On Wednesday evening the school won its third North Coast Section championship of the year when the Wildcats baseball team defeated Point Arena in the Division-6 championship game at Ferndale High.
The Cats, who finished runners-up to St. Bernard’s in last year’s NCS final, dominated the Pirates and won the game 17-5 in five innings.
According to head coach Justin Andersen, winning the NCS this year was the team’s primary goal ever since they lost to the Crusaders last spring.
And a determined group of players rose to that challenge.
The section crown follows the NCS titles won by the Ferndale girls soccer team and the Cats football team in the fall, with several of the baseball players also featuring in the latter.
In fact, 11 of the 15 players on the Ferndale baseball roster also took home NCS and state medals in football.
That group includes Trent Titus, Tanner Pidgeon, Levi Dixon, Jonah Anderson, Jarrett Smith, Prescott Langer, Wes Renner, Tristen Titus, Thomas Fergison, Jake Kurwitz and Rolland McClurg.
All in all, it’s been a very impressive year for Wildcats sports and this group of players in particular, all of whom are setting new standards for the school and many of whom could yet win more section titles before their time at Ferndale High is done.
On Wednesday, they blew open a tight game with six runs in the bottom of the second inning and seven more in the third.
Check out some of the many highlights from the game above, as well as the postgame celebrations.
The Cats will now turn their attention to the upcoming CIF state NorCal playoffs, which get under way next week.
The Ferndale players will find out their seed and bracket for the NorCals on Sunday as they look to continue an historic and very successful year for Wildcats sports.
