By Ray Hamill — Three H-DNL players have been included on the CalHiSports.com Division-4 all-state girls basketball team, which was released on Sunday.

The trio includes St. Bernard’s junior Laila Florvilus, who was also recently named the CalHiSports Division-4 girls state player of the year.

Joining Florvilus on the all-state team is her St. Bernard’s teammate Madelyn Shanahan and Arcata’s Nora Talty.

All three players enjoyed outstanding seasons this past winter for their teams, who faced off earlier this year in the CIF Division-4 NorCal final at College of the Redwoods.

St. Bernard’s won that game and would go on to win a first-ever state championship for the H-DNL just three days later.

“Maddy and Laila complemented each other so well,” St. Bernard’s head coach Matt Tomlin said earlier this year. “On offense they ran the high pick and roll game to perfection and were our two highest scorers.”

The dynamic duo were equally effective on the other end of the floor.

“On defense Laila led us in steals on the perimeter and Madelyn blocked over seven shots a game inside,” the long-time coach added. “They were a dynamic tag-team that led us to a state championship.”

Talty, meanwhile, provided a steady hand on a young Arcata team that enjoyed a memorable playoff run and came within one win of qualifying for a state final for the first time in school history.

The senior guard set the tone for her teammates at both ends of the floor and enjoyed an outstanding career playing for the Tigers.

There were just 16 players total from around the state to make it to the Division-4 all-state team.
