College of the Redwoods sophomore Alyssa McCovey made some school history this week after becoming the first Corsair athlete to compete at the NorCal state heptathlon championships in a quarter of a century.

And a strong finish for the former Del Norte Warrior lifted her to an 11th place finish, which is the third best finish in the event in school history.

In her final event at the two-day championships, which were held on Tuesday and Wednesday at Sacramento City College, McCovey set a huge PR in the 800 meters.

The CR standout passed four runners in the final 120 meters to place second and she broke her previous PR by seven seconds, finishing in a time of 2 minutes, 33.41 seconds.

It was McCovey’s fourth PR in her seven events.

She began the championships with the 100m hurdles and finished in a time of 17.92 seconds, and she followed that by setting a PR in the high jump with a jump of 4’ 5”.

The standout sophomore would set two more PRs in her final two events on day one.

Her third event of the day was the shot put, where she broke her previous best ever mark by two and a half inches with a throw of 28’ 7”.

McCovey then closed out a busy day one with a PR in the 200m, finishing in a time of 27.72 seconds.

Day two got off to a rough start for the 2022 Del Norte High graduate.

She fouled her first two jumps in the long jump, but would quickly recover to jump 3.85m on her third and final attempt in the event.

The javelin was next and McCovey threw 19.87, before closing out the championships with a very impressive showing in the 800m.
