Cubs, Wildcats split conference doubleheader in Miranda

The South Fork and Ferndale girls split a Little 4 doubleheader in softball in Miranda on Monday.

The Cubs took the opener 11-7, before the Wildcats won game two 13-7.

The games were the conference openers for the Wildcats, who are now 1-1 in the Little 4 and 2-5 overall, while the Cubs are now 1-3 in conference and 3-3 overall.

A scheduled Little 4 doubleheader between the Warriors and the St. Bernard’s Crusaders in Hoopa on Monday was postponed and will now be played on April 12 instead.

The Hoopa girls have yet to play a conference game, while the Crusaders are 2-0 in the Little 4.

In game one on Monday, South Fork’s Cadence Young led the Cubs at the plate and finished 2-for-3 with a walk as she continues to impress, while teammate Makenzie Brewer finished 1-for-2 with three walks.

Cloe McConnell and Mackenzie Coleman combined in the circle and struck out seven while walking two.

Addison Collenberg led the Wildcats on offense in game one and finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, while teammate Madison Gossi went 2-for-4 and drove in four runs.

Ferndale’s Tinnley Pidgeon and Danica Dowd each also went 1-for-4, with Pidgeon scoring a pair of runs and Dowd driving in two runs.

Olivia Gossi was 1-for-5, while Collenberg pitched five innings and took the los sin the circle.

The Wildcats, however, responded well to the loss and racked up 15 hits on the way to winning game two.

Madison Gossi continued to impress sat the plate and went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, while Pidgeon and Dowd each went 3-for-5 with two RBIs.

Collenberg, Rainy Rodriguez and Olivia Gossi each also had a pair of hits in the win to round out a good game for the visitors on offense.

“We’ve been hitting the ball really well and if we can come together on defense and our pitchers throw strikes, we’ll be competitive,” Ferndale head coach Jeremy Griffith said. 

Dowd was clutch with a couple of key hits in game two, while Madison Gossi and Pidgeon “both drove the ball well” according to their coach, even on outs.

Coleman, meanwhile, had a big game for the Cubs in game two.

The versatile freshman has made an immediate impact at the varsity level and went 2-for-3 with a walk at the plate, while also finishing with 10 strikeouts in the pitcher’s circle.

Young also had a good game and went 2-for-4.

Next up, the Cubs will play a single game at Lower Lake on Wednesday before hosting Hoopa in a conference doubleheader on Friday, while the Wildcats will travel to St. Bernard’s for a Little 4 doubleheader on Friday.
