Eureka’s Sebastian Standish hit a game-winning home run in the top of the seventh inning of game one in Saturday’s baseball doubleheader at Arcata, as the Loggers opened the Big 5 with a two-game sweep.

In an exciting and evenly-matched opener, the visitors twice rallied from a one-run deficit to pull out a 3-2 win and they would carry that momentum into game two, which they won 5-3.

Standish’s two-run blast to right center field helped the Loggers overcome a late 2-1 deficit.

Royce Olson also homered for the Loggers in game two, while Ben Lukens hit a home run for the home team in game two.

“I thought Eureka played very well. They limited their mistakes,” Arcata head coach Troy Ghisetti said. “I thought we had our chances and we shot ourselves in the foot, base-running and on the defensive end. We gave them way too many chances.”

Both games were well pitched by both teams.

Lukens got the start for the Tigers in the opener and pitched six strong innings before impressive sophomore Tanner Kees took over.

Ty Crawford got the start for the Loggers and kept the Arcata bats in check for much of the game, before Olson came in and got the win in relief.

Cooper Ohlsen pitched six strong innings in game two for the visitors, while Kees got the start for the Tigers, with Jonah O’Brien also throwing three innings in relief.

Both losses went to Kees, but mistakes by the home team cost them a chance at beating a talented and deep Eureka roster.

“Overall Eureka played better than we did,” Ghisetti said. “But we gave them way too many chances and they deserved the wins.”

Anthony Ebert continued to impress at the plate for the home team and finished 2-for-4 in game one and 3-for-3 in game two.

“Anthony Ebert did a great job for us,” Ghisetti said. “And I thought both of our pitchers — Tanner and Ben — threw well enough to get the win, but when you make mistakes like that it costs you.”

Lukens also made some noise at the plate and finished with three base hits over the two games, including his home run, while Kees and Alex Greenway each also had a base hit in both games.

Arcata’s Eli Greenway also had a hit in game one.

No other stats were available for Eureka. Humboldt Sports reached out to the head coach, who did not respond.

The Tigers will have a bye in conference play next week and will travel to play at the Shasta tournament in Redding, which begins on Tuesday.

The Loggers will play McKinleyville in a three-game series next week in a battle of two 2-0 Big 5 teams.

Game one is set for Eureka on Wednesday, with the Panthers then hosting a doubleheader next Saturday.
