Vigil, Kramer tie for low score in round two of H-DNL golf

Eureka’s Talon Vigil continued his impressive start to the new H-DNL boys golf season with a second victory in just five days on Monday.

Competing at the Redwood Empire Golf Course in Fortuna, Vigil shot a 76 to tie St. Bernard’s Jack Kramer for the low score of the day.

Vigil and Kramer beat the field by six strokes and are tied for the league lead after the opening two rounds.

Vigil’s impressive performance helped lead the Loggers to a second team victory as they once again edged rivals Arcata.

The Loggers won the team event by three strokes and now hold a five-stroke advantage in the season standings.

Arcata’s Joaquin Ponce and Eureka’s Julian Goodman tied for the third best individual score of the day with identical rounds of 82.

Arcata’s Mason Alway rounded out the top five with a round of 84.

Several other golfers shot under 90.

Arcata’s Lucas Wembley shot an 85, while his teammate Zane Slattery was just one stroke back with an 86.

Brenden Mosher also shot a 96 for Arcata.

The Eureka boys showcased their depth with five of their golfers shooting a 94 or better.

In addition to Vigil and Goodman, Andrew Stewart (85), Wyatt Zerlang (91) and Jerome Lyons (94) also impressed.

The Fortuna Huskies also had four golfers shoot a 94 or better.

Dawson McWhorter and Rocklin Austrus led the Fortuna boys with rounds of 88, while teammate Robbie Shoemaker shot a 93 and Lucas Butler finished with a round of 94.

The Ferndale Wildcats

McKinleyville’s Jake Gardner also impressed for the second straight round and shot an 88 to lead the Panthers, while teammate Carter Reeves had a 98.

St. Bernard’s Braedon Simpson was second best for the Crusaders with a round of 91, while teammate Carson Johnson shot a 97.

Kai Russell led the Del Norte Warriors with a round of 90, while Braedon Rice led the way for Ferndale with a round of 120 and Littlefoot Williams led Hoopa with a 114.

Fortuna had the third best team score of the day with a 363, followed by St. Bernard’s (388) and McKinleyville (395).

The third round of league play will take place at Del Norte next Monday.
