Tigers tie one, lose one on opening day at Montgomery tournament

The Arcata Tigers tied a game and lost a game at the Al Rabinovitz baseball tournament at Montgomery High on Tuesday.

The Tigers opened the day against Analy and tied 4-4 in nine innings, before falling 16-5 to Rancho Cotate later in the day.

The Arcata boys are now 4-2-2 on the season.

Junior Anthony Ebert had a good day at the plate and finished with a pair of base hits in each game, including a double in game one and a triple in game two.

Ben Lukens also was 2-for-4 with a double against Analy, while teammate Eli Joachim finished 2-for-3.

Finn Warner and Eli Greenway each finished that game 1-for-4 to round out an eight-hit team performance.

Lukens, who has impressed on the mound early in the season, pitched five solid innings for a no decision, giving up two earned runs and a pair of walks and striking out four.

The junior standout continued to make some noise at the plate in game two and was one of six players to hit successfully in a game that got away from the Tigers.

Lukens was 1-for-2 with a double.

Tanner Kees also had an impact at the plate and finished 2-for-3, while Joachim went 1-for-2 with a double.

“We’re swinging the bat at the level we need, but we’re still making way too many base running errors and defensively we’re not there yet,” Arcata head coach Troy Ghisetti said.

Warner and Greenway each added a hit in the loss.

Warner also took the loss on the mound.

The junior pitcher gave up five earned runs in three innings and struck out one, while walking two.

The Tigers will try to get back to winning ways when they play in the tournament third-place game at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
